Dear Readers,

On June 25th, Pallavan Learning Systems held its third webinar titled ‘Developing a Sustainable Community Approach to Promote Learning and Creating a Framework for Reopening Schools’. We had panellists from The Doon School, Dehradun, India; Paradise Valley Private School, Muscat, Oman; The Royal Academy, Paro, Bhutan; and The Scindia School, Gwalior, India. There were also two parents on the panel. We were joined by over 50 participants from schools in India, Bhutan, UAE, Singapore, the Netherlands and Oman.

Learning is a continuum that takes place through the multi-layered relationship of the learner with the environment. This pandemic has shown that wholesome learning cannot take place in isolation and it is dependent on the learners’ relationship with teachers, family, peers, online community and the environment. Often regarded to be outside the formal learning process, the people surrounding the learners play a big part and possess an immense potential in bringing about learning. It is crucial that we meaningfully engage and support the people surrounding our learners – parents, siblings, caregivers, peers, extended community, and online/digital community – and formally include them in our learning framework. This is an opportunity to reevaluate learning methods and pedagogies in order to create a sustainable community approach to promote learning as we work on a framework for reopening schools.

In addition to the detailed account of the discussions that took place, the newsletter has a synthesis by Pallavan Learning Systems.

Dear Readers,

Learning doesn’t happen in a vacuum nor does it happen spontaneously. For deep learning to happen, we must strive to be in constant learning mode. This is different from merely being lifelong learners. Everyone is learning throughout their lives, there is no question about that. A child who is 8 years and someone who is 80 is learning from their everyday experiences. To me that is not the true meaning of lifelong learning. Lifelong learning should be active in nature. It is something that we should seek and nurture, rather than learn by accident.

As we question our definition of learning and sharpen our understanding of learning experiences, we need to re-evaluate the ways we can elevate our learning and the associated tools and resources at our disposal. The paradigm shift in learning is towards a form of hybrid learning in which the continuously evolving technologies, learning spaces and stakeholders are fully utilized and integrated into the learning process. This is what I refer to as augmented learning. The framework of augmented learning not only focuses on these elements but also seeks to understand and build on the relationship and interaction amongst them that bring about the enhancement in one’s learning. The role of the community and the role of the learner in helping that community thrive contributes to the augmented learning environment.

Dear Readers,

Ritinjali is an effort to provide access to quality education and skill development in various parts of the country. One of Ritinjali’s initiatives, the Second Chance School, is a vibrant two-year residential program for youth who lost their first chance at education. Located in Mahipalpur, New Delhi, it currently houses 43 boys from different parts of the country and abroad as a part of this program. They are engaged in technical education, internships and jobs. Out of 43 boys 10 of them were not able to return to their hometowns and experienced lockdown in a different way. With all their engagements stalled for the near future they had a lot of time in their hands which they used very responsibly and effectively.
In this issue we take a look at what the Second Chance School did during the lockdown.
